Shanghai life - Shopping
◦ Shopping areas
• Huaihai Zhong Lu
It's the famous and old shopping
street, shops and stores spring along the street from Xizang Nan Lu
(East) to Changshu Lu (West), with malls of Istean, Parkson, Pasific
etc. Those small streets as Maomin Lu, Ruijin Er Lu, Chang Le Lu, near
Huaihai Zhong Lu are also a part of shopping places.
• Nanjing Xi Lu
Nanjing Xi Lu is the high scale
shopping place, offering a number of high-end shopping malls like Plaza 66, CITIC Square and
Westgate Mall, as well as a collection of brand name stores.
• Nanjing Dong Lu
Near the Bund, it was the No.1
shopping street in this country, now it's a
pedestrian street and shopping place for tourists, daily visitors number
around 1.5 million.
• Xintiandi
It's a newly
renovated area of near Huaihai Zhong Lu, restored nongtang
(alleys) and shikumen (stone-framed gate houses). Besides an
interesting glimpse into the past architecture of Shanghai, this area
holds a host of boutiques selling international designer fashion,
creative home furnishings, arts and crafts, as well as many trendy
restaurants.
• Xujiahui
This is a hub of numbers of
shopping malls including Grand Gateway, Oriental Shop etc, just next to
Hengshan Lu bar street and an open public park nearby, many restaurants
around here.
◦ Furniture & Decor
◦ Antiques
Antique
furniture shopping is a major pass time among the expat community in
Shanghai. You will find an amazing selection in the various shops and
warehouse in the city. We advise you to visit a few different shops before
purchasing so that you can get a sense of the style and variety of
furniture they carry. Give you an opportunity to assess their skill and
craftsmanship on refinishing the furniture.
Bargaining is part of buying antiques, especially in the street markets.
There lots of great bargains but be aware of fakes, there are lots around.
If you plan to collect Chinese antiques you should understand the current
laws regarding the export of antiques from China. Any item more than 40
years old will need to have a "red seal" before it can be
exported. The red seal is your guarantee that you can take your purchase
out of China. Keep all purchase receipts. Red seals can be affixed and
appraisals carried out (for a fee) at the Culture Relics Bureau, prior to
leaving China. You can arrange for an inspector to inspect your purchases
and advise which articles need seals. The inspector can fix seals as
appropriate. Many people prefer to have the seals affixed during the
course of their stay rather than during the busy period just prior to
departure. Those who already own Asia antiques should check to make sure
they will not have any problems exporting them at the end of their
assignment. Most antiques found in the street markets are from Qing
Dynasty and are approximately 100-150 years old. Only antiques made after
1789 may be legally taken out of China.
• Dongtai
Lu Antique Market
|
Sprawling across Dong Tai and Liu He Kou roads (near Xintiandi), this outdoor market might overflow with fakes (some say less than 5% of the items are genuine), but it's a fun place to browse and rummage. Behind each stall is a larger shop with pricier items displayed under counters. Interesting buys include embroidered slippers for bound feet, Communist-era posters, Maoist memorabilia and black-and-white photos of old Shanghai. Take a look inside Chine Antiques, 38 Liu He Kou Lu, for beautifully restored Qing Dynasty wooden furniture. |
