◊ Living in Shanghai

--------------------------

• Expatriate life - Transportation

◦ General

There are two airports in Shanghai, Hongqiao Airport is in the west of the city, only for domestic lines, Pudong Airport is in the east of Pudong with about 40 kilometers to the city, it's for domestic and international lines.

Shanghai railway station is located on Tianmu Xi Lu, in north of the town, trains and luxury trains go to every destination where the lines reach. There are several trains a day going to Suzhou, Wuxi and Nanjing. 5 lines luxury trains "type Z" trip between Shanghai and Beijing everyday and all leave in a half hour from 7:00-7:30pm. The trains trip between Shanghai and Hangzhou trips 4-5 times a day, the station is in south of Shanghai called Meilong Station.

Shanghai holds the best urban public transportation system in China, although it's not good enough.

- Pedestrians

There are plenty of sidewalks where pedestrians can stroll at leisure. Crossing the road like a local takes practice. A pedestrian crossing could be not safe - watch out those cars which might not stop for you. Try to cross at traffic lights, note that traffic can turn right at any time regardless of a red light.

- Bus

Shanghai has a well-planed bus lines system, there are plenty of buses and conveniently go to anywhere of Shanghai. But currently the buses are not very clean and crowded especially at 8:00 -9:00 am and 5:00-6:00 pm when people are going to work or back to home. Buses run every 10-15 minutes from 4:30 am to midnight.

- Taxis

Taxis are plentiful and provide an inexpensive means of transportation. All taxi drivers will provide a receipt if requested. Usually taxi drivers do not speak English so be sure to have your destination written in Chinese. It is also helpful to have a Chinese and English map.

- Metro

It has the youngest metro system but most rapidly expanding in the world, 11 lines of metro open since 2010, each operating from south to north, west to east, and circle lines, with one ticket can transfer in different line. The underground is very efficient and inexpensive but gets very crowded especially at rush time or weekends. >>> Check out Metro lines map.

◦ Driving in Shanghai

Foreigner should take local license (easy apply if you have international drive license) when driving in Shanghai, usually you need to modify driving habits. The traffic is heavily congested and many of the local drivers are inexperienced. Cyclists and Pedestrians are generally undisciplined and often ignore traffic lights, the best way to avoid accidents is to drive slowly and defensively.

In the event of a traffic accident involving person injury, Chinese law requires the following:

  • Injured people should be immediately taken to the hospital
  • The scene of the accident should be preserved and the police should be called. Those involved should wait at the scene of the accident until the police arrive.

If an accident occurs and there is no personal injury the parties may agree amongst themselves at to the cost of the damages and settle the case themselves on the spot. This course of action may jeopardize any insurance claims.
